2012, a monday

Saw the orthopedist, picked up Thai for lunch. Spent all afternoon finishing ‘Assassination Vacation’, then returned a bunch of books to the library and picked up almost all of their Edward Gorey-illustrated John Bellairs books (my favorite when I was a kid). Spent the evening reading and watched a couple episodes of ‘Psych’.

JPL Open House! Got there around 11am and skipped the long lines for the things I saw the last time. Saw the microdevices laboratory cleanrooms, the area where they do some testing of the Mars rovers in a Mars-ish environment, the giant environmental simulator vacuum chamber and the video about JPL’s missions in the solar system that was very moving. Maybe I was over-emotional after the stressful day I had yesterday, but I was near tears probably three times during that movie (ok, maybe more); it felt so good to have my current life plan validated. The strong feelings brought up by being at JPL, seeing those images of other planets and moons, and hearing people talk about what they’ve accomplished at JPL, confirmed that I am on the right path. Added my name to a long list of signatures to be printed on a silicon chip (one micron high!) and sent into space with Curiosity/MSL! Ate a ‘burrito’ (it was terrible but I’d been walking for hours and was hungry) and listened to the Q&A at the Mars Exploration Rovers area for awhile before heading home. Processed my photos and videos from the day, then finished up my calculus homework. Now for a light dinner (or maybe just dessert) and a review of the calculus notes before something mindless or my PopSci.

packed and drove to san francisco. had an incredibly pleasant drive – the mountains of the angeles national forest were exploding with wildflowers and the fruit trees were full of little fruits. met up with eric in the afternoon and went to the ramp for nachos and drinks. had excellent pizza and meatballs at goat hill pizza and specialty’s cookies for dessert! watched ‘the big lebowski’ (first time since i’ve lived in LA).

Yoga for the first time in over a month—felt amazing but I’m sure I’ll be sore tomorrow. Played piano for a few hours, called Mom and Grandma for Mother’s Day.

2011, a friday

Up early to move my car. Yoga, awesome breakfast, laundry, decided to be responsible and called Hawaii to see what I needed to do to get ready for school there. Then decided to call CU one last time and found out that all those people I’d talked to previously should’ve done something they didn’t do, and basically my application has been held up for four months. Distraught, to say the least, so blew off some steam playing video games, played the piano, recopied some calculus notes. Could not avoid responsibility altogether though, so did some calculus homework. Am now going to drown my sorrows in tea and Hell Fire Pepper Jelly and maybe some mindless movies and probably a lot of stress-eating.

went to smc and took my placement exams. took over two hours. in a really uncomfortable chair. in the desk right by the door. annoying. but opposite of annoying: afterwards, met up with jula for starbucks and randomly luke wilson was in line behind us! fought traffic home, ate, watching ‘castle’, sooo excited for ‘fringe’ tonight!

Slept in, did laundry, caught up on Hulu shows before they expired.

2011, a thursday

Class, prelab, lab, found out I did just as crappily on this test as on the last two. Did a cool experiment though – made a spectroscope and measured emission spectra of elements. Soothed myself with moscato and ‘Fringe’.

2010, a wednesday

worked out, studied math, ran errands, did math practice tests. made delicious roasted cauliflower and ate it all. ate too many girl scout cookies. more math.

2012, a friday

Slept in, it rained all day and was kind of gloomy. Saw ‘the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ then brought home a bunch of Indian food. Gorged myself and watched ‘Pride & Prejudice’, the commentary, then ‘Master and Commander’.

Class, homework, studied for my chemistry test. Took chemistry test; I think I rocked it. ‘United States of Tara’, too tired to read.

more math! endless eating. why why why must I love food so much? lots of TNG in the background. lusted after season 4 wesley crusher. listened to some new (to me) music and heartily recommend graham parker. will now watch more ‘united state of tara’ and read some ‘american gods’ which is starting to get really interesting.

2012, a thursday

Didn’t set an alarm this morning. It was awesome. Recycled my old laptop battery, hit Target, spent the whole afternoon outside reading ‘Assassination Vacation’ and eating chips and salsa. Then a coconut popsicle. Then a giant bee showed up and wouldn’t leave me alone so I had to pack it up and go inside. Went to see ‘This American Life Live’ and it was totally amazing as usual. I fell in love with Tig Notaro—the whole Taylor Dayne bit was AMAZING. Got a whole list of awesome books to pick up from that show. Home, finally ate dinner at 10pm. Ate that bourbon salted caramel cupcake from Tee & Cakes and holy god it was amazing. Might have to go back there tomorrow and get more cupcakes.

Class, yoga, homework, studied for chem test, ‘the Chicago Code’. Plan for the rest of the night: more studying and some Nutella.

spent all day relearning math. rewarded myself with chocolate.

2012, a wednesday

Up super early for my physics final. Terrified I was going to fall down the stairs at the Coors Event Center—had to walk all the way to the bottom and there’s no handrail (walking downstairs is the hardest thing to do in this walking cast thing). That place is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Took the final; no idea how I did. Got home and the power in the whole building was out. Read magazines outside for awhile, finally the power came back on (along with the brain-scrambling fire alarm in the hallway) but I had to wait awhile for hot water to shower. Made Mother’s Day cards, sent my physics book back to Chegg, went to the library and got a library card and checked out a stack of books, and picked up a couple cupcakes from Tee & Cakes. Spent the whole afternoon reading books. Watched the finale of ‘Castle’ (Tahmoh!) and ate the strawberry milkshake cupcake WHICH WAS AMAZING.

went to see ‘iron man 2′ which I enjoyed immensely. went to megan’s and did her pilates class, then we went to the store and got stuff for dinner. maria makes dirty rice like no other! watched bits and pieces of chick flicks while clayton played with maria’s new iphone. very nice relaxing day!

Studied for finals. Took a break in the morning to get groceries. Took Sed/Strat midterm and ehhhh it was unexpectedly hard. Studied a little for physics when I got home. To bed early since I have to get up at 6 tomorrow for my last final.

worked out, met up with meghan and went to nate and liz’s going-away picnic in santa monica. caught up with some NU peeps, held little calvin and fawned over his super-soft skin and tiny fingernails and oh he is the cutest! went to renee and amanda’s birthday party at the village idiot and had a good time with fancy drinks and friends dressed up more than usual. went to terry’s afterwards and made out with her cat for awhile. well, we like eskimo-made-out. face nuzzling and what not. did this just get weird? maybe.

Went to Unique LA with Lora, Meghan and Megan. Got a great necklace, birthday presents for Renee, and ate delicious food. Took a nap then met Renee, Terry, et al for Renee’s birthday dinner at the Edendale. The food there was really good too – we had the best bread pudding ever for dessert. Stopped by Amanda’s to wish her a happy birthday, then home to read a bit before bed.

worked out, did more research/emailing/boring stuff. went to first fridays at the natural history museum with megan and met up with doug and christine there. saw a whale skeleton! and paleontologists cleaning bones! and touched a dinosaur bone! and saw all kinds of beetles and arachnids and cockroaches! science!! after that, megan and i met up with renee, terry, alex and terry’s friend at jones for a mini-birthday celebration for renee. megan and i split this AMAZING apple pie dessert. felt exhausted by 11 and thus felt old.

Did my circuit training video for the first time in almost a year and it kicked my butt. Went to Burbank to prebuy my ticket for ‘Thor’, ran errands. Headache, so took a nap, then met Meghan, Elaine and Renee for the movie. Went to Yogurtland afterwards and haven’t been there in so long – I got twice as much as usual because I wanted to try all the new flavors.

did applications and research and a ton of emailing for school-related things. had dinner in burbank which was DELICIOUS and then went to menchie’s afterwards for yogurt. day = success.

Studied for my astronomy final all day. Took my astronomy final; it was kinda easy? It’s also the class I’m doing the best in this semester, so not a surprise.

up early, hiked the mishe mokwa trail to the top of sandstone peak with megan, meghan and watson. the scenery was gorgeous – all of the normally-sad-looking scrub bushes were in full bloom, the mountains were lush green and bursting with wildflowers. we saw lots of little lizards, brightly colored beetles, and at the top of sandstone peak, up above the clouds, we saw hawks soaring around and below us. got extremely carsick on the way back. spend the rest of the afternoon eating and watching TNG.

Last day of class for this school year! Immediately jog-hobbled home, shoved food in my mouth, then drove to the movie theater to see ‘the Avengers’. Highly enjoyable, great one-liners and gags, lots of Joss Whedon goodness. Hit Target, home to pretend to study before I gave up and made an awesome dinner that included a perfectly roasted sweet potato. ‘Sneakers’, weights, changed my Instagram and Twitter usernames to ‘karabrug’ so they’re both the same, and shorter, and easier to remember. Going to try to read through all of my astronomy midterm review sheets before I really give up for the night.

Class, did a little studying, installed my new laptop battery. It is amazing. Like a whole new computer! Doesn’t get as hot as soon, the battery access door actually seats properly, the trackpad clicks like a dream. Going to have to retrain myself to click a lot gentler.

Calculus test, I think it went pretty well but I was really crunched for time. Home, read chemistry, chemistry homework. Went to class but there were tech difficulties so class was cancelled. Trader Joe’s, actually got to eat a real dinner on a weeknight!

got up painfully early. eric drove me to midway, and i sat there like a zombie until i boarded the plane. read ‘john adams’ the whole way. had potbelly’s (yay!). got to LA half an hour early! elaine picked me up and we got snacks at harajuku crepe in beverly hills. unpacked, read mail, am at a loss as to what to do since it’s too late to take a nap and too early to just pass out for the night.

Class, then stayed on campus instead of walking home between astronomy and sed/strat lab. Spent the hours sitting out on the patio of the Geology building, got some astronomy reading done, then did puzzles while listening to my winter 2010–11 mix (which I’d forgotten is awesome). Got some good sun; maybe sunburned my neck a little. Went to lab—surprise! TA didn’t even bother to show up. Hobbled home, finished my sed/strat project as best I could.

Yoga, studied for calculus test. Stopping now; have decided the best course of action at this point is to make sure I’m well-rested. Time for some ‘Doctor Who’, then bed.

went to free comic book day at challengers. had a late lunch at bakin’ and eggs and met up with lindsay there. saw her new apartment and helped her move in a car load. went to belly shack with eric and ate an insane amount of food. went to andrew and josh’s birthday party and only had one beer, but then we were short our minimum for the room rental so veryone pitched in to ring up $400 worth of alcohol. I got the most expensive thinthey had on hand – a double glenfiddich, up – and watched it magically refill itself every time I got it down to a single. we got rounds for the bar staff and then found out the kitchen was still open so ordered a ton. finally hit our goal and cabbed it back to cecile’s, extremely full and extremely drunk.

Last week of class. Doesn’t feel like it though, which is what I’m blaming from here on out for my lack of motivation to do any kind of studying for finals. Spent the day reading my ‘the Cabin in the Woods’ visual companion outside and eating snacks.

eric picked me up and we went to hot doug’s for lunch, then went up to evanston and walked along the (extremely windy) lakefill at NU. we went to b&n so I could pick up the one book, one twitter book for the summer – neil gaiman’s ‘american gods’. walked around downtown evanston for a bit, got some interesting candy at world market (tea candy!) then picked up cecile and went to cross rhodes for dinner. oh greek fries! so delicious! came back to cecile’s and watched SGU then hit lazo’s for a snack. ian met up with us (foursquare works!) then we went to the whistler for fancy drinks.
