life (briefly) near a supernova‘ (PDF) is a paper written by steven i. dutch which speaks in layman’s terms about what it would be like to actually witness a supernova. for illustrative purposes, he offers some pretty chilling comparisons to smaller-scale events:

The sun going supernova would be the equivalent of standing a kilometer away when the entire Earth’s nuclear arsenal goes off every second. And this radiation flux would go on for several days before dropping to a plateau of “only” a billion times solar luminosity for roughly 100 days. Clearly, the Earth would not survive.

(…)

How bright is 10 billion times solar luminosity?…It would take 100,000 Suns to cover the visible sky. Imagine the entire sky covered with Suns. Now imagine each of them 100,000 times brighter than our Sun. You could never see anything this bright. Your light receptors would overload instantly and you would probably vaporize before the sensory input could reach your brain. Very likely the flux of penetrative (X-ray and gamma ray) radiation would be enough to disrupt every atomic bond in your body before the sensory input could reach your brain.

good reading for any of you who are interested in sci-fi, astronomy or really big explosions that result in entire planets being boiled away by radiation.

today at cute overload they have a great video of a manatee squishing his nose against the glass at an aquarium and another was linked from the comments.

the size of our world uses images of various celestial bodies set on a virtual table top to illustrate the size differences between the planets in our solar system and the major stars in the sky. very illuminating – i didn’t realize neptune was so much larger than earth and i certainly didn’t realize that antares is freakin’ ginormous.

headline: Defense Minister Resigns Via Text Message

this somehow reminds me of that episode of ‘sex and the city’ where berger breaks up with carrie in a post-it note or that time my boyfriend broke up with me via email – completely lame but still hilarious.

kozyndan

this QTVR piece by kozyndan is, at first glance, really cute. penguin balloons, happy tanuki graf artists and adorable yellow creatures eating fruits. then you slowly realize that horrible things are happening. the rabbits are tipping over the turtles. the gingerbread men are crying over their lost limbs. the tomatoes are screaming as the big yellow creature eats them.

to cheer you up i direct you to the amorous nudibranches

tropicália av interaction

this was published a bit ago, but here is an article at new media caucas which features a photo i took of the tropicália exhibit at the mca last year.

via IM:

me: dude. let’s play some tomato tennis

travis: hahahhaha – that’s basically like making ketchup on people’s faces!

me: all the more reason to do it!

A couple of my friends started a clothing company – Good Night, TV! – last year and this month we launched the website so now you can browse and buy online!

All of their awesome shirts are printed with soy-based inks on sweatshop-free stock (american apparel).

Catch Good Night, TV! this summer at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn, NY or this fall at Renegade in Wicker Park.

horchata cupcakes

i just made these horchata cupcakes and holy fucking good goddamn are they GOOD. i took a bite and almost passed out. hopefully my coworkers will find them just as heavenly tomorrow and our big art-day-slash-cinco-de-mayo festival will be glorious. there will be super-nachos and margaritas. mmm. but these cupcakes! oh the cupcakes. pardon me, but i have to be alone with my cupcakes.

every straight boy’s fantasy come true – a man who actually got away (for awhile) with giving out free breast exams door-to-door. “charged with several felonies” indicates to me that at least several women fell for this. i’m not sure whether to be horrified or amused. leaning towards amused.

update: vaguely related in that it involves breasts, boobs for bourbon street.

[from travis! i bet he’s so happy i’m crediting him with this.]
