i’ve always wanted to take a road trip like the do in the movies – one that is full of carefree fun, convertibles that don’t muss your hair and cathartic moments of bonding, etc etc. but getting back to reality – what i’ve always wanted to do is take a road trip to see all of the weird landmarks in the united states, like the world’s largest frying pan and the world’s largest rubber band ball and the world’s largest ball of twine. now i can finally do it because there is a handy website that lists all of these modern-day wonders: what’s large where in the US.
so – who’s in?
the worlds largest thermometer is in baker, ca, on the 15 between LA and vegas – it’s always been a landmark of the trip between the cities and i always feel like i’ve accomplished something every time i’ve seen it. i’ll see it again driving to laughlin, nv this weekend for work and i’ll definitely think of you!
I like the “World’s Largest Detached Arm” in Maine. It’s like they wanted to build, say, the world’s largest man. It was too hard, so they quit four days in and this was the end product.
I’m also curious about the “World’s Largest Ball of Paint” in Indiana. I guess something round is at the core and they just keep painting over it.
Don’t forget to stop at the World’s Largest Truckstop in Walcott Iowa to buy all of your road trip needs!! It’s a can’t miss! Check it out http://www.iowa80truckstop.com/
I’m in! When do we leave?
maybe it’s actually just a giant wad of paint! i mean, paint can do some weird things. remember how dave w. told us the story of how he had to get stitches because he sliced open his finger on a paint drip?
As a many time visitor to the World’s Largest Truck Stop, I can say that it is both beautiful and scary at the same time. We used to fuel up there on the way home from quiz bowl trips to University of Iowa. They have a good Wendy’s, but at times it felt like the Star Wars Cantina in terms of the clientele.
there is a superman statue in metropolis, illinois, of course.
