today meghan and i had lunch at home in los feliz. home is actually the first place i ever ate in los angeles (when i first visited la with eric a few years ago he took me to home right after he picked me up from the airport) and it was as good as i remembered. we had breakfasty stuff and delicious bloody marys. i’d been craving a bloody mary for – who knows how long. they were really good but not nearly as good as the bloody marys dawn makes.

after lunch we drove to the LA city college for the felt club holiday event (like renegade holiday…but not quite as awesome). there was a lot of cute stuff there – i squeed a little when i saw jordan crane‘s booth and i couldn’t walk by i heart guts without buying a really cute “i’m a liver not a fighter” tshirt. i also got a super-soft tshirt from jamie zollars. there were a lot of other shirts and prints i wanted to get, but i had to pace myself because i also got a really cute recycled-fabric jacket from rebe – the sara sweatshirt in black and pink. it’s super cute and soft and just what i needed for SoCal’s weird seasons. meghan got the maryanne coat in burgundy and it is SO CUTE on her.

i did have to hold myself back from buying bacon-related items (see the imaginary world and the devil and angel bacon tree ornaments from…*wince* i didn’t catch the name of the company). there were also some really awesome paperie goods and paintings. unfortunately nothing caught my eye christmas-present wise. which was supposedly the reason for the excursion. oh well. …did i mention my awesome new jacket?

the piano is gorgeous. the end. maria pointed out that i need to buy a cover for it or something so it stays pretty. thanks again, mom & dad and grandma for the awesomest christmas present ever!!

maria, clayton and i just got home from seeing ‘american gangster’. which was really good. you should see it. will denzel ever not be fantastic?

tomorrow’s the day! my piano arrives! tonight maria and i drove to sherman oaks to walk watson and we hit guitar center on the way back. i got a stand and a bench and i am ready to rock. or – as hard as you can rock when you’re playing beethoven. which…actually – beethoven does rock pretty hard.

i miss fall.

meghan and josh’s wedding was beautiful. the whole weekend was fantastic – the ceremony was touching and funny and everyone and everything looked so lovely. holly and i did meghan’s hair and it turned out beautifully, my toast went well and the food at the reception was amazing. i’ll write more when i post the few photos i took – i’m still tired despite the three hour nap this afternoon!

update: photos posted

yesterday was FANTASTIC. first i slept in. right there – the day is starting out right. then maria and i saw an early showing of lars and the real girl. it was really good but so so sad. way sadder than i thought it would be. afterwards we went to wendy’s for lunch then picked up some stuff at target, including a bunch of styling products for the wedding (sunday is experiment-with-kara’s-hair day).

in the afternoon i met pat at skylight books for adrian tomine’s q&a and book signing. it was great – he was really well-spoken and had good answers for everyone’s questions. he signed everyone’s books in a different style too. i had him sign my copy of ‘scrapbook’. also great? the free wine and 11% discount for the store’s birthday. which came in handy because of course, i couldn’t leave that place without buying some comics. i got jason’s ‘the living and the dead’, which is about zombies (!!!), and ‘animals of the ocean, in particular the giant squid’, which is just plain awesome.

after skylight i got pat’s amp (for the wedding) then drove to meghan’s for ladies night. meghan made her awesome tiny-meatball-lasagna, we drank wine, played with watson (meghan & josh’s adorable cocker spaniel-golden retriever mix) and watched ‘sex and the city’. super-girly 🙂 we even got to eat with the new wedding place-settings. (have i mentioned that i’m so excited about this wedding??)

then, after meghan’s, i went to pat’s to hang out for the rest of the night…and spider-man was on cable. the first one. with willem dafoe being all awesome and schizophrenic. best. saturday. ever.

yesterday was meghan’s bachelorette party up in santa barbara – meghan, her friend margaret and i went on a wine-tasting tour and drank wine until we couldn’t swallow any more. we went to four wineries and sampled about six wines at each one. the wine was delicious and the whole thing was pretty educational. our tour guide, jessica, was really nice. afterwards we went to opal for dinner and it was soooo good. i’m really excited about the wedding! so many people are coming to the wedding that i haven’t seen in a really long time. but, i’m nervous about my toast (even though i’m going to keep it short and simple and pretty much know what i’m going to say) and i don’t have as much time as i’d like to practice walking in my shoes (stupid procrastination). stilettos and grass are poor bedfellows, but they look so good. i also have to figure out what i’m going to do with my hair and make-up and accessories. meghan and i got earrings in santa barbara, but i don’t know if i should wear a bracelet too or what. all of these things to think about that i never bother with on a normal day.

this coming weekend is josh’s bachelor party – camping – so meghan is going to have a girls’ night at her place while she holds down the fort with the puppy. then the next weekend it’ll be the Main Event and a flurry of activity!

my parents and grandma are getting me a nice digital piano for christmas (and next christmas…and my next birthday…for the next two years) and i just spent $60 on sheet music. are we noticing a theme here? sheet music, comics, notebooks, cards – if it’s made of paper i can’t control myself.

tonight meghan, josh and eric (in town on a layover between chicago and san francisco) came over for dinner and games. maria made her awesome mini meatloaves with spicy tomato sauce, josh and eric brought special autumn/belgian beer and i opened the bottle of cherry wine i bought in germany. afterwards we played apples to apples and buzzword. it was a really nice night and i’m excited to do it again! i hadn’t seen eric since…ehh…i don’t know – february? jon’s birthday i guess? so it was great to see him. chloe wore her little dog sweater-hoodie and we even turned on the fireplace. i’m glad i got the fun in while i could though – looks like i’ll be working through the weekend and i have to drive to costa mesa in the morning.

i started work yesterday and so far it’s pretty good. i got a nice work computer (dell m4300) with all the newest (windows) programs (vista business, office 2007, cs3) and the people are really nice. everyone’s really laid back and there’s a lot of joking around – reminds me a lot of mythryn during its golden age. i feel pretty comfortable in the ux group and am looking forward to kicking sharepoint’s ass.

what’s not good about this job? well, once i’m done training i’ll mostly work on-site at clients’ offices and from home. BUT while i’m training i have to drive down to costa mesa. in orange county. 55 miles away. a 45 minute – 2 hour drive depending on how craptastic the traffic is at the time. each of the past two days i’ve spent 8 hours at work and about 2.5 hours in the car. not. fun.

i’ve learned something though: it’s a MIRACLE there aren’t more accidents on the freeway. with the way some asshats drive and how narrow lanes are i can’t believe how accident free this city is! i mean – these aren’t open country roads. these are 12-lane interstates where (gridlock-free) cars drive at 70mph in the slow lanes and the lanes themselves are so narrow i can practically stick my hand out the window and touch the giant car-carrying semi next to me.

luckily i avoid the traffic circus tomorrow and thursday when i get to work from home. as a reward for keeping my nerve and not getting into an accident, i think i’ll sleep in till 8 like the good ol’ days before i was gainfully employed.
