Today was the first day we got to sleep in a bit. We then followed the Buller River up to Marlborough. It was another beautiful day, and our special day too – the anniversary of the day Mom and Dad picked me up at the airport.

We stopped at Highfield Estates winery for lunch. The food was delicious and we had a view of the valley with endless rows of grapevines and moutains in the distance. We bought a bottle of riesling for the cruise and then headed into Blenheim to check in at our hotel room, which turned out to be a little one bedroom apartment, fully furnished and turned out.

We drove to Montana Brancott winery and after a very good tour and tasting, we stopped and got groceries to make dinner and I picked up some itch cream for the insect bites I got in Milford, which were not showing any signs of getting better. We spent a relaxing evening eating roast chicken sandwiches and watching New Zealand movies.

Another early morning – lots of driving to do! We saw the hot air balloon again and lamented not having known about it to book it. We drove through the rainforest mountains of Mt. Aspiring National Park and stopped at the spectacular spectacular waterfall at the Gates of Haast in Haast Pass. It was about twenty degrees cooler down by the water, and I got a nice little rock for a souvenir. We followed the western coast up to glacier country and had beautiful views of white beaches and crystal clear water.

At Franz Josef glacier, Dad hiked to the base of the glacier while Mom and I took a helicopter to the top of the glacier and spent a few hours hiking around the ice checking out ice caves and streams and bottomless holes in the ice. Our guide was an American so we had plenty to chat about. The glacier hike was the experience of a lifetime – breathtaking!

Afterwards we drove up to Westport, stopping for dinner in Greymouth, where Dad’s meat was brought out on a hot stone slab for cooking. Later I noticed these places all over Australia, so that must be big down there.

An early morning – we saw a hot air balloon high in the sky as we left Queenstown. We drove through Otago and saw cows, thousands of sheep, and even a few deer farms. We entered Southland, gassed up in Te Anau, and drove through the Southern Alps and through Homer Tunnel to Milford Sound. The drive wasn’t nearly as rough as expected so we arrived a few hours early. We enjoyed the loud sounds of the rainforest, the lovely views of Mitre Peak and examined some big, papery white spiders that had spun their webs along the tour building’s portico. We had lunch at the one eating establishment – the Blue Duck Café. I ate a meat pie and we listened to the Johnny Cash playing over the stereo.

The boat tour of the fjord was gorgeous. At the beginning of our voyage we saw bottlenose dolphins playing at the bow. We learned that the area gets over 20m (65ft) of rain a year, and it rains 200 out of 365 days. It hadn’t rained in a few days, but previous to that had rained three weeks straight. The fjord was huge and impressive, and the scenery was fantastic – rainforest running up the mountains and right down to the water’s edge, exposed parts of the Pacific plate’s fault line and fur seals sunning themselves on big flat rocks.

We stopped at the Milford Underwater Observatory and saw black ferns, schools of tiny fish, starfish and urchins. The water was full of sediment, which the guide said was a recent development; usually the water was crystal clear and they weren’t sure why it was so cloudy. (note: the observatory is where I got my sand flea bites)

We boarded a different boat to go back to the dock and got a good look at Bowen Falls, which provides water and power for the few buildings in the area. On the drive back to Queenstown we stopped and saw a gorgeous waterfall in a gorge called ‘The Chasm’ and took photos at the Mirror Lake.

I met Mom and Dad at LAX, but before we could board the plane – small hiccup: a security breach at the checkpoint by our gate. We were delayed while police searched for who knows what/who, and our whole flight crew was trapped on the other side of security. Eventually we were allowed aboard the plane, and were assured we’d make up the time in the air. We had a great flight on Qantas – a little schedule so we’d know when food was coming, good food, great entertainment, a surprising amount of sleep.

We landed in Auckland then flew to Queenstown. Had a laugh at our first exposure to the New Zealand accent – at the airport a woman kept coming over the PA asking passengers to go to the check-in hut which sounded exactly like ‘chicken hut’. As we flew over the South Island we had amazing views of the Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea. When we exited the plane onto the tarmac the air smelled wonderful – like cinnamon toast, I swear! A good beginning to the trip. We were surprisingly un-jetlagged so after we checked in at the hotel (Dad did great driving on the other side of the road for the first time!) we took the gondola up to the top of Bob’s Peak and took in the view of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables and the paragliders. We walked up the path that wound its way through and over the luge track, and basked in the sun awhile (it was super hot in Queenstown – probably nearly 90 and the excellent weather and blue skies would follow us all around the island) then came back down the mountain and ate dinner at a pub. We got dessert to go – this AMAZING Bailey’s molten chocolate cake – and managed to eat most of it before going to bed.

My favorites from the year.

White elephant gift exchange + snacks & drinks at Maria and Clayton’s, then karaoke all night at Sardo’s.

On Thursday, Elaine and I drove to Las Vegas – top down in the convertible, music blaring – it was fantastic. We met Maria and her hotel, the Trump International, then went to dinner at Pink Taco at the Hard Rock. Elaine and Maria did some gambling, then we called it an early night since Maria had to work the next day.

Friday, while Maria worked, Elaine and I hit the Fashion Show Mall and ate at the Harrah’s buffet. We picked up Maria, checked into Paris, and went to the outlet mall. We had dinner at the burger grill at Paris, then got ready for our first night out. Megan arrived and we all went to Pure. We met some nice guys who got us into the VIP area, and spent the rest of the night drinking and dancing.

Saturday, nursing some hangovers, or at the very least moving very slowly, we went to the Flamingo buffet, Hoover Dam, the Paris buffet, then passed out for awhile in our room. We ended up going to Tao, which was insanely crowded. Every once in awhile it snowed real snow over the dance floor. After Tao we gambled a little at the Venetian and met some young, possibly 18 year old guys who were hilarious. We went back to Paris and Elaine and I stayed up to 5am or something like that at the blackjack tables.

Sunday we grabbed a quick lunch at one of the cafés in Paris, then went to the top of the Eiffel Tower and watched the Bellagio fountain show. We took a few more photos, then started the drive back to LA.

Terry and I visited the Scion Space gallery and Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City for some great gallery openings. The Shag exhibit and Corey Helford was so popular, we had to wait in line for about 20 minutes even though we got there when it opened.

More from the Shag exhibit here and see all of the Shag artwork here.
