hot crackers, is this guy’s portfolio awesome. you can find it at okaydave.com and it’s the best online portfolio i’ve ever seen. he uses after effects and flash to create a portfolio that is actually interesting and gives the visitor insight into his creative process. in the logos section you rollover the detail images and can see handwritten notes about the logo and it’s development. for each project he includes a video where he explains the entire project and his ideas going into it, its evolution and the final product.

you can also visit his professional site to read his journal and look at past projects he did while in school (most of which became paid projects that you can see on okaydave.com). okaydave.com has only been live for a month and has already won several awards, and deservedly so.

update:

eric: man he plays guitar and draws a comic strip too. when does this guy find time to masturbate? or urinate for that matter?! he must have a sketchpad hanging over the toilet!

lost: the cube

so…i’ve been hesitant to mention this, because on the nerd scale it’s only a few steps up from admitting that i’m really into d&d or gurps or i’m 38 and still a virgin or something, but for the past few weeks i’ve been hard-core diving in to perplex city, a massive alternate reality puzzle game…ok this is already sounding lame. i can sense all of you normal healthy-social-life people falling asleep or getting ready to steal my headgear.

the point is, this game is really cool. there are a ton of websites and mysteries to look into – this made-up universe is deep – a lot of intrigue, and the game itself is pretty challenging. you buy pretty foil packets of cards and solve the puzzle on each card for points. the person with the highest points once all of the cards have been released wins £100,000 (about $200,000 USD)!

the cards have other puzzles hidden in them too – the higher-ranked cards have map pieces on the back, some cards (the prime-numbered ones) have playing card markings and some have large shaded spaces thought to be parts of letters that will form a clue when the cards are arranged correctly. the cards also lead to more clues about the central mystery of the game: who stole the cube? one puzzle was to figure out a girl’s phone number based on clues, and if you call the number that leads to the girl’s website which in turn leads to all sorts of clues about the search for the cube and the conspiracy surrounding it.

so far i’m ranked 2170 out of 17,727 registered players. to give you an idea – i have 703 points and the player in first place has 7000. the game is british and the first wave cards have only been available for purchase in the united states for less than a month, so i think i’m doing alright. the packets are pretty cheap – $20 for 4 packs of 6 at insound. i figured it out, and if i buy the minimum amount of packets (no repeat cards…uh, i have 8 packets so far and like 10 repeats) to get a full set of cards, i’ll have spent at least $200. uh…yeah. so we’ll see (feel free to buy me some cards. makes a great umm…early going away gift…or a ‘just thinking of you’ gift or a ‘hey nerd, keep on nerdin!’ gift). i have no illusions that i’ll win, but i’d like to finish in the top 1000. so far some of the puzzles are really easy and some are insanely difficult. wish me luck!

han solo frozen in carbonite, in legos

do you like legos? everyone likes legos. these people, arguably, like legos a little too much. amongst the models, a 61-note harpsichord and a scale model of a volvo xc90.

check out this article over at somethingawful.com – it’s a ficticious log from on board enterprise NCC-1701-D (ok, the next generation ship, alright? look, i’m a NERD OK? haven’t i always been up front about this?). it is…HILARIOUS. a sample:

Stardate 41021
Call: 02:55 – Replicator Malfunction (emergency)
Complainant: Lt. Junior Grade Worf

Report: Was woken up in the middle of the sleep cycle by a call from Lt. Worf. Asshead said he was having difficulty getting the replicator to produce k’ruh’nuwhatever. Some bullshit Klingon crap. I get there and Worf answers the door completely naked. Great start. He smells like he’s been running laps inside a dog’s asshole and he is apparently drunk again. I ask him what the hell the k’ruh’nuwhatever crap is and he launches into some unlistenable shit about his Klingon house. He’s slurring all over the place with his giant deformed Klingon dong flapping around and I’m barely able to stay awake. I pretend to “tune” the replicator until he passes out and then leave.

Status: Resolved.

lego difference engine

andrew carol, great mind behind much of the LEGO serial protocol, has constructed a working LEGO technic difference engine able to “compute 2nd or 3rd order polynomials to 3 or 4 digits.”

i mean…holy shit right? his explanation of his process is really interesting (if you’re into that sort of thing) but also pretty dense if your brain has been out of calculus – or algebra…or, let’s be honest, math – mode for awhile. more photos at the bottom of the page.

jamie caliri is the guy behind the way-more-awesome-than-the-movie credits of ‘lemony snicket’s a series of unfortunate events’ and the new united airlines commercial. if you follow the united link you can see a behind-the-scenes video about the making of the commercial.

seth, chris ware & ivan brunetti

stripped books is running a serial based on a comics panel that took place in chicago last year. it was moderated by ivan brunetti and mostly has to do with the other artists’ workflow and respective styles. what is really cool is that as the subject and speaker changes, so does the style of the comic. sometimes it looks like a page from ‘it’s a good life if you don’t weaken‘ and sometimes you could swear you were reading chris ware‘s comic in the reader.

the funniest song i’ve heard in awhile – ‘make you happy tonight’ by tripod.

of course, when jon sent it to me he thought that i would be playing it via some headphones, but we don’t rock the headphones here at work, so instead i played it out loud and everyone got to hear it…and thus my status as office loser is cemented.

still, the song is hilarious.

first of all, i would like to direct everyone’s attention to the worst album covers over on pitchfork. jon sent me the link today and it’s been entertaining aaron, antonio and i all afternoon. the captions are the best part, reminding me of the do’s and don’ts from vice.

also, a sad little observation: somehow tuesday has become my favorite night of the week. and why? not because of half-price movies or half-price pizza (which doesn’t exist at o’famé anymore anyway), but because it’s my favorite night of tv. T. V. admittedly, i have always been a tv fanatic and usually have a whole roster of shows to watch each night, but somehow tuesday night tv is the only night of shows that gets watched live (gasp!) or only stays on the tivo for 18 hours, max.

despite all past failings (all of those prematurely-cancelled shows. sigh. moment of silence for ‘firefly’ and ‘profit’ and ‘strange luck’ and ‘space: above and beyond’ and ‘the inside’, etc etc), fox has managed to snag my two favorite shows for this year – ‘house’ and ‘bones’. ‘house’ stars hugh laurie as a particularly crotchety misanthrope who will go as far as necessary to prove a point and ‘bones’ stars emily deschanel as a forensic anthropologist (one of my many toyed-with ideas for a profession) and david boreanaz as an fbi agent (also once my chief aspiration). if only fox had ‘numbers’ (two hot jewish brothers, one an fbi agent, one a genius mathematician – basically an entire family of the hottest things i can think of), then i would have to go ahead and offer up my soul.

i’m seeing ‘harry potter and the goblet of fire’ this thursday night at 12:01 with a big group. the girls will be all a-twitter over daniel radcliffe and the ruskie who plays ‘viktor krum’ while lamenting the absence of the graduated ‘oliver wood’ and the boys will be all over emma watson and maybe the chick who plays harry potter’s girlfriend (i haven’t seen her yet). both groups’ obsessions will freak out and disgust the opposing gender/sexual-preference group while at the same time, each group will have no idea what is wrong with their own brand of barely (if-at-all) legal lust. fun times ahead.

upon sending me this link:

eric: can i rent that place out for parties?

* geez, if you don’t know the backstory behind that…uh…well it all started with dan and this theory about john woo and his long-suffering assistant…see woo doesn’t actually do any work, his assistant does it all but never gets the credit. everyone’s on set and the 1st ad or whoever is all, “hey, where’s woo?” cut to the inside of a strip club where john woo is sitting there watching the girls and exclaiming in a really high voice, “boobies for woo! woobies for woo!” …i guess you had to be there. and hear it in dan’s voice.

stop looking at me like that.
