i redeemed some of my discover card cashback bonus today. huzzah! i always forget it exists and then it’s like free money – and shopping spree time! except this go-round, i traded in my bonus for a $45 CVS gift card so i can pay for my birth control.

i can’t tell if this is something that should make me feel proud and responsible, or just sort of old and pathetic. maybe it would be easier to decide if i were actually seeing any action, if you know what i’m sayin’ [wink wink nudge nudge].

…aaaaand all of my relatives who read this just gouged out their mind’s eye.

spotted on sunset: kind of like a taco truck, except it’s in-n-out. and a semi.

despite the questionable terms of service agreement, i signed up with plinky, once i looked over my blog and realized it’s wanting for original content. however, plinky does not direct-post to moveable type blogs, so you’ll have to hit up my tumblelog, miscellany to see the posts, check my plinky page, or see them posted up on facebook. if there are any that are really good i’ll double-post them here. here is the first prompt i answered:

3 overplayed songs i love anyway

i don't listen to much radio, but when i do, a lot of it sticks.

Misery Business
by
Paramore

so fun. so catchy. happy, yet angry.

Sara Bareilles
by
Love Song

loved it from the first moment i heard it. really catchy, simple but great piano part. good pop songs are hard to write, you know?

Flashing Lights
by
Kanye West

the first time i heard this song was in a store in LA. i had just moved away from chicago, and this song took me back to dancing at darkroom or subterranean.

dude down the street changed his ‘la cucaracha’ car horn to the theme from ‘the godfather’.

since apparently ficlets is being shut down, i reprint here the one ficlet i managed to write. i had intended to write them regularly but inspiration was rare.

If Only It Were Pickles

“Does this smell OK to you?” Jack asked.

Sam recoiled. “I dunno what it’s supposed to smell like. It looks…OK. I guess.”

Jack gave the jar a lazy shake and watched the contents quiver. He shrugged. Sam held out the backpack and Jack dropped the jar inside. Sam staggered under the extra weight and winced. He balanced the bag on his thigh and tried to zip it shut.

“My mom says it’s four miles away,” Sam gasped, hopping a bit on one leg. “How long do you think it’ll take to get there?”

On the other side of the garage, Jack started picking through a stack of boxes and opened one marked “TOOLS”. He didn’t answer.

Sam took a breath and carefully shifted the backpack over one shoulder. “How long d’you think?” He eyed Jack and frowned. “What’re you looking for? That’s my dad’s.”

Jack pulled a long screwdriver out of the box, feeling its balance. “Something sharp. Or heavy. I’m not taking that thing anywhere without something I can depend on.”

Sam heard the jar gurgle. He was starting to have second thoughts.

goldstar beer flowchart ads. sadly, so often very very true.

ok i know this movie has already attracted a lot of outrage – the dakota fanning rape movie! omg! but the CHILDREN what about the CHILDREN etc etc – but this bizarro television trailer is not helping matters (sorry i can only find the theatrical-length ones online). it sort of dances around the rape while clearly being all about it (no mention of the rest of the film’s actual plot, save a fleeting shot of maybe-elvis) with a voice-over that is completely misleading in tone. maybe it’s because don lafontaine is gone – he couldn’t lend his gravitas to the narration – but…come on! this guy sounds like he’s describing a heartwarming family film on the hallmark channel about a lost puppy. fail.
