most predictable oscars ever.

it’s like watching my life flash before my eyes.

…if you don’t like to hear about girly stuff. basically, i’m having my period and a uti which means double the pleasure double the fun for the area between my navel and pubis. i want to go home so bad and go to bed. but i can’t. i’m stuck at work doing a project i loathe and everyone is leaving at the end of the week and it will be just me and ben all alone all day in this huge cavernous room. eric’s going to see a client this afternoon so i can’t even talk to him, plus he was a jerk and ate my yogurt from the refrigerator so i don’t want to talk to him right now anyway until he apologizes or gets me some more yogurt. also i forgot to set the vcr to tape enterprise tonight and eric STILL hasn’t found me a divx of the last episode of sex in the city. muon’s going away dinner is tonight which i am actually looking forward to, but i still have three and half hours until the end of the work day, and i’ll have to hurry home and up to evanston when really i just want to go home NOW and curl up with my blue’s clues blanket and stuffed armadillo (named paul) and nap while ds9 rumbles in the background and hope that i can avoid the various needs to enter the bathroom. what a shitty day.

last night i went to the brew & view with eric, jon, pat & jessica (2 high school friends) and their friend tony. saw elf and bad santa. it was the perfect balance of innocent fun (mr. narwhal!) and down-and-dirty raunchiness. much beer was had and i had a particularly delicious turkey & ham from subway – i think this is due to the inordinate amount of pepper the lady put on it. after the brew & view jon, eric and i went to el famous burrito for some delicious horchata and nachos. the only blight on the evening was the man in front of us during elf who was smoking a particularly foul-smelling cigar.

i got spammed again. bad. ‘vioxx,’ some asshat bot put comment spam on EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY POSTS. that meant i had to remove BY HAND 160 COMMENTS. this also means that i had 160 EMAILS TO DELETE. fucking spam.

tonight i FINALLY got to see pat and ryan play with the whole band, since EVERY TIME they had a gig before, i was out of town. or the venue burned down. long story. anyway, it was sort of appropriate i guess that tonight’s show was at nevin’s – since they were so big at open mic there last summer (back when it was kara and the boys before it was pat and the girls). the show was AWESOME and i am so proud of those guys! ryan is such a great songwriter and pat has picked up the bass so quickly (but was there any doubt? this kid has had nary a piano lesson and can blow through songs it takes me months to learn)!! their temp drummer is amazing – this guy can play everything. will and steve met kate, jon and i at nevin’s and a lot of pat and ryan’s friends from home and school were there. also talked to bogdanovich (peter barnes) who i hadn’t seen for awhile. that kid is always wearing the same outfit. always. paul was there working the sound system and later sheila dropped by too. it was a party!

i picked up ryan’s cd, ‘climb,’ which you can purchase over at cd baby for $12 (so worth it) or come to a show and get one for $10. they’re already getting airplay in st. louis!

ok i’m done gushing – here’s ryan’s website if you want more info.

it all started with a doughnut. i inhaled the doughnut. it made my throat kind of raw and scratchy. i thought that was the end. then on thursday i started coughing and started feeling feverish. i stayed at work and came in the next day and oh man did i pay and pay and pay for that. friday night i couldn’t sleep due to coughing fits so violent i was sure i was going to throw up and on saturday i had a fever and chills and sweats all day. sunday was a little better, less body aches a little less coughing. except of course when i tried to go to sleep, this is when the coughing would immediately start again. or worse, it would lie in wait until i fell asleep and then it would attack, chasing me to the bathroom to cough up what? some rewarding mucus? something to make it worth while? no, some barely thicker-than-spit fluid. sunday was also when eric, who had been so sweet and awesome taking care of me while i was barely coherent on saturday, started to get sick and get a fever. monday eric was having chills and sweats and fever and i felt worse again. today, 5 days from the first symptoms and something like 6 different kinds of drugs later, i feel about the same, although eric’s fever has gone away. the bright spot? thought you’d never ask:

ladies and gentlemen, the octo dog frankfurter converter. maybe i’ll get this for my mom.

kara: i just kept waking myself up with my coughing

eric: maybe you can try the all night, sneezing, sniffling, coughing, stuffy head, so you can pass out medicine

here in the outer office we’re used to all sorts of weird noises coming from the ceiling and the furnace/ac unit which is perched right outside our door. we’re used to the screeching noise like a car peeling out that usually accompanies the roar of the blower coming to life, pushing air through the 2 foot wide pipes that hang over our heads. we’re even used to the banging from the workman crawling around in the access space above the women’s bathroom (right next door).

but today.

today there was no screech just a sudden accelerating rush of air that sounds sort of like when you sit with your head pressed against a furnace or maybe you sit under a waterfall. louder. and louder.

and then kate noticed it. the smell. the burning carpet chemical toxic smell that even as i sit here is getting stronger.

ew.

so i promised some sort of trip update and…it’s not going to happen. at least not in the multimedia-photo-and-laser-show sort of way i had hoped. later i’ll maybe post some pics of the most beautiful sunset ever and me in a big goofy yellow cowboy hat and me schmoozing with a giant stuffed stoned bear and eric being engulfed by the earth’s vagina…but for now i’ll just say that new mexico was awesome and i think you all should go there. beautiful!

addendum: as we were flying out of the albuquerque airport (a day late since our flight to denver was cancelled…but they put us up in a great hotel room and a free dinner!) i could see an archaeological dig down in the valley! it was so cool!
