quick recap:

  • thursday was elaine’s birthday, so maria, elaine, april and i went to dinner at the great greek. the food was really good, and the live band and dancing was so much fun!

  • jodi had her holiday party friday night, and i met some really nice people! …and i bookended the party with about 5 hours of bioshock. pat and i were up until 4am and i’m sure it won’t surprise you to hear that when i was trying to get to sleep, every time i closed my eyes i could see the game. i had dreams about it, even. it was kind of awesome. and then? the puppet episode of ‘angel’. WHICH WAS AMAZING. puppet angel is ADORABLE.
  • today i met elaine and maria at the crepe place in the farmer’s market for lunch. the crepes were delicious. watching the guys make the crepes was even better.
  • i came home and tried to start packing (i fly to chicago tomorrow) but had a terrible headache, so instead passed out for 2+ hours. woke up with the headache and overall feeling like crap. (do i regret the 4am bioshock marathon? NO.) i took some tylenol and ate, and now i’m feeling fine, am dressed up, and ready to go dancing with maria and elaine for birthday celebration part 2! let’s hope i can balance having a good time with making sure i’m in good enough shape tomorrow to get ready to fly home.

today majel barrett-roddenberry died. she played nurse chapel on ‘star trek’, lwaxana troi on ‘star trek: the next generation’ and ‘star trek: deep space nine’ and the voice of the computer on all contemporary trek series, as well as the forthcoming jj abrams movie. she married gene roddenberry, creator of ‘star trek’, and by all accounts she was a lovely person who will be dearly missed. the chemistry she had with patrick stewart? AND jonathan frakes? i mean, who can make picard uncomfortable the way lwaxana can? or make odo uncomfortable, for that matter. *sigh*

last week mark sent me this mushroom soup recipe and i decided to give it a go. the first time i made it, it came out weird. the recipe says to use 1/4 cup sherry, but that is WAY too much sherry. i added a lot of milk to mellow it, and that made it palatable, but i was not pleased.

so, today i made the soup again and it is great! i used only 2 tablespoons of sherry and used 16oz of mushrooms (2 whole packages). i added probably 1 1/2 cups of milk at the end – just enough to balance the sherry so the soup is creamy and umami but has a little bit of tang around the edges. i added a couple shakes of salt and a lot of pepper (i love pepper)…and the soup is delicious! i would like to try it again, maybe with yogurt instead of milk to see what happens, and also try out some different kinds of mushrooms.

i had chick-fil-a for lunch AND IT WAS GLORIOUS!!!!

  1. buy blender
  2. buy stuff to make this mushroom soup mark says is easy and amazing
  3. see ‘rachel getting married’
  4. make the soup
  5. eat the soup
  6. desperately fight urge to sign up for another daytum account

quite unexpectedly (although i had about a day’s warning), today i was laid off from the job that i’ve had for over a year. at first i felt sort of confused about how to feel, but i’m feeling pretty good about it now. i was completely miserable at that company, doing incredibly tedious, boring, not-at-all-what-i-want-to-do-with-my-life tasks, and i was planning to leave before the end of the year anyway, so this just moves things up a bit. and plus, now i get unemployment! all around, a win. plus i get to enjoy my vacation to argentina (i leave tomorrow!!) for real, because i don’t have to worry about coming back to The Job. word is there’s going to be a celebratory pub crawl when i get back in town. see pat for details.

since i was right by the mall to see ‘quantum of solace’ anyway, tonight i took advantage of the 7 for $25 sale at victoria’s secret (usually it’s 5 for $25 – it’s like two pairs of underwear for free!). after i checked out, the guy at the register handed me my bag and:

me: oh no, i don’t need a bag – i’m going to a movie so i’ll just put the underwear in tissue in my bag.

guy at register: ok

[he takes the tissue-bunting-ed underwear out of the bag and puts the bundle on the counter]

guy at register: [friendly/proudly] here is your panty taco.

me: [wtf??] uhhhh well, it’s more like a burrito really…

guy at register: i guess it is! haha!

me: …[nervous laughter]

me: [exeunt]

today i purchased my tickets for the holidays and OH MY GOD am i glad that’s over. so many variables. so complicated. but – i’ll be home for a week around christmas, fly to NYC on the 30th to hang out with travis for new year’s, then i fly back to LA on the night of the 1st. whew!

yesterday i knocked out another item from my Big List Of Things to Get Done, and now i just have smaller less terrifying things left to do.

oh! the weekend! i drove up to san francisco (well, oakland) friday night and came back sunday night. i ate tacos or burritos (or quesadilla with mole) for every meal except my last one there (because i was kind of mexican-ed out) and it was fantastic. i went to the new california academy of sciences museum and saw some neat fish and cockroaches and an albino alligator. i saw ‘repo! the genetic opera’ which was good, but not as campy as i thought it would be, and thus not as great as i thought it would be. ian drove up and i had lunch with mike and met his girlfriend. all around, a good trip. also i got to see zump. and was introduced to ‘world of goo’ for the wii. and got to fiddle with eric’s awesome a/v setup. and petted cats in eric’s courtyard. and saw adorable kittens in berkeley. so yeah. i’ll be back.

best election ever! i can’t remember the last time i cared about politics or actually believed that things in this country could change for the better. i can only hope that everyone in the US, no matter who they voted for, will do their best to move the country forward, help neighbors and communities, and help to improve our standing in the global arena. congratulations USA!

thursday: cameron made pumpkin pies and toasted pumpkin seeds. some people came over, and we watched ‘the nightmare before christmas’. yay!

friday: walked 5.5 miles around west hollywood and hollywood. went to pat & asa’s, went to glen & kristina’s, walked to the street party, crashed some house parties, walked all the way back to pat & asa’s. the weho street party was definitely a spectacle, but now that i’ve experienced it, i think i’m good for the next….forever. the ‘death note’ costumes turned out pretty great though, and i’m already excited for halloween next year.

saturday: was supposed to go to the dia de los muertos celebration at hollywood forever cemetery, but ended up spening the whole day and night at morgan’s boss’s house. pool, hot tub, giant tv, cute dogs, awesome tacos, pumpkin ale. it was like a mini vacation and i was so relaxed when i left. then i got rear-ended on sunset so the inner calm was pretty much blown.

sunday: had lunch with maria and meghan, hung out at maria’s and watched ‘true blood’, went to elaine’s for ‘gossip girl’ and cocktails. ended up shockingly drunk after one martini. drunk-texted a lot of people. watched one episode of ‘gossip girl’ 2.5 times because i kept losing track of what was going on. finally sobered up enough to drive home and collapse into bed.

today: totally hung over but excited because my new macbook is delivered today! i can’t wait to hold it and stroke it and mercilessly test that ultra glossy screen. i have 14 days to return it, and i’m really hoping that screen is not too bad of an annoyance. also today – have to review my propositions and measures booklet and figure out which ones i will yea or nay tomorrow. and renew my car insurance. also probably take a nap.
